Discipleship At the River
What is Discipleship?
Discipleship is following Jesus, not just learning about Jesus. The actions need to suit
the teaching, as Jesusʼ brother James told us, otherwise our faith is dead (James 2:17).
Teaching
If by ʻdiscipleshipʼ people mean ʻteachingʼ, we do that. But teaching is more than just
lecture-style data-transfer. A good teacher will be concerned with whether her pupils ʻgot
itʼ, which is more than just spouting information. Thatʼs why we try to affirm different
learning styles at the River. This means that sometimes our Sunday messages include
Q&A or breakout sessions. Sometimes people are encouraged to do puzzles, to handle
objects, write, perform dramatic readings, meditate or any number of activities that
inspire us to action. There is a place for lectures, but not all the time.
