Alternative Worship Experiences (AWE) at The River
What is Alternative Worship?
“Alternative worship is what happens when people create worship for themselves, in
a way that fully reflects who they are as people and the culture that they live their
everyday lives in.”- Stephen Collins, smallfire.org.
AWE at the River
Once a month at our Sunday Gathering The River sets aside our musical worship in
favour of other forms of engagement. These worship times are called AWE –
Alternative Worship Experience.
AWE may involve drawing a picture or writing a
poem. It may involve talking with a neighbour about how a certain picture impacts us in
light of a passage of Scripture. It may involve biting a saltine cracker, and then a plain
cracker, and then writing down the difference that salt makes! Anything that will help us
understand God and his Word a little better, so we can develop an increasingly
worshipful attitude toward him. AWE lets us engage in worship in fresh, new ways that
we had not considered before. Music is a powerful worship tool, but it is not the only
tool.
